attended RASC webinar on Stellarium

Registered and attended the Homebound Astronomy webinar by RASC national office. Jenna was support; the session was lead by Chris V.

Chris introduced the Stellarium software and gave a nice introduction to using the tool. I answered a bunch of questions on the Zoom chat channel. And I sent a follow-up to Jenna after explaining that this is still officially beta software.

Hey, Blake

Version 0.20 is out - with Almagest!

What did you mean that Stellarium is Beta?

Computer software development goes through different rounds or levels of testing. Initially the programmer tests for things. But then other users are asked to test the software on different computers and devices and in different environments and conditions. After that round of testing, the program is revised and becomes more stable. Traditionally, a program is then released as "final" or complete. Stellarium has been in the beta phase for some time as the developers want people to test it on different computers in different conditions, hence the 0.20.0 number as opposed to 1.0.0 or 1.2.0. Beta software may be unstable and crash frequently or a newly added feature may not work correctly or may not work at all.
