The ESA Herschel space telescope went dark. It ran out of helium and could no longer cool the sensitive infrared components. Still, it had a great run, 6 months longer than predicted.
One of my favourite images is that of a "classic," close-to-home galaxy. Do you recognise it? That's the Great Andromeda Galaxy.
