Double-Star Measurement Made Easy by He said you need to use a Barlow. Confirms what I felt at the CAO a couple of weekends back. You need to get the binary stars much further apart to effectively use the scales in the etched reticule. He explains it differently: you need to increase the focal length of the telescope. He recommends getting it over 3 metres.
